LOGAN Is Coming To Theaters In Black And White On May 16

Image
Last month can certainly be marked as one of the more resonant moments in comic book movie history, and specifically with regard to Logan from director James Mangold. Not merely following the R-rated formula per Deadpool for the sake of trendiness, the film delivered an otherwise concentrated, focused and intense story that ultimately delivered the violent brutality that's been long-awaited in the Marvel superhero's screentime for the first time in nearly seventeen years.

By that turn, it also carried over its own timeline as things branched out from Bryan Singer's Days Of Future Past adaptation, thus allowing Mangold's own exploration of the character capitalizing on its popularity continued in print with Marvel's Secret Wars. And not for nothing either with many critics complimenting the movie from its riproaring festival debut in Berlin to its rollout via 20th Century Fox. Our own Khalil Barnett weighed in on the matter in several ways describing it thus, in par…

YA Novel Film Adaptation, SUPERMAN VS. THE KKK, Is In Development

Image
If there were ever a time for superheroes to strike a blow for racial equality on the big screen, I think now is as good a time as any and with word of a new book adaptation now the works from Lotus Entertainment and PaperChase Films. This latest update regards the 2012 YA novel, "Superman Versus The Ku Klux Klan: The True Story of How the Iconic Superhero Battled the Men of Hate", from author Rick Bowers, from which Katherine Lindberg will adapt the screenplay for Lotus and PaperChase, and financier and executive producer Marco Vicini.

The film in question, Superman Vs. The KKK, will take its cues from the renowned DC property's heyday as a radio show starting in 1940, wherein the film will reportedly focus its plot set in 1946 with a former Klansman who goes undercover and works with the Anti-Defamation League and the producer of the Superman radio show. Per Deadline: “The themes of this true story fall right in line with the type of stories that inspired me to want t…

The Epic Gang Saga Continues In The First Teaser For HiGH&LOW THE MOVIE 2: END OF SKY

Image
I couldn't tell you much about LDH and NTV or their innerworkings on any given day, except for what little I know of Japanese supergroup Exile Tribe and their stunning reign in TV and film as of late 2015 with in-house megaproject, HiGH&LOW. It's only been available in Japan with its first two seasons of HiGH&LOW: The Story Of S.W.O.R.D. featuring the brewing drama and explosive action as gangs and crime families battle each other for dominance in a town divided by five warring territories.
Apart from live concerts and events (the music itself kicks ass too), the saga ultimately led to last summer's feature film debut with Kubo Shigeaki's HiGH&LOW: The Movie, followed by its subsequent spin-off, HiGH&LOW: The Red Rain from Yamaguchi Yudai, and now Shochiku is poised to follow up on its trilogy with two more titles between August 19 and November. For this, the first short teaser for HiGH&LOW THE MOVIE 2: End Of Sky has arrived with HiGH&LOW THE MO…

So. What's a ninja to do when he comes across what a cat he believes is his father?

MY NAME IS LENNY Gets Bloody And Brutal In The First Trailer For The British Brawler Biopic

Image
Director Ron Scalpello's new movie takes you into the world of underground boxing in the eyes of London's once-living most notorious hard man in the new film, My Name Is Lenny. A quick lookup drew me to some interesting facts about plans for this particular film centered on the life and times of street fighter Lenny McLean which otherwise now has actor Josh Helman (Mad Max: Fury Road, X-Men: Apocalypse), fully immersed and in character. Explosive and brutal, My Name Is Lenny is based on the true story of Britain's most notorious bareknuckle fighter: Lenny McLean (Josh Helman, Mad Max: Fury Road). A known associate of The Krays, Charles Bronson and Ronnie Biggs, Lenny was an East End icon, bouncer and enforcer at the centre of the unlicensed boxing world. Welcome to the no-holds-barred epic portrayal of his life, from a troubled and violent childhood to his early fighting years, exploring his loving but volatile relationships and bitter rivalry with Roy Shaw (UFC Middleweigh…

Image
Vine Alternative Investments (“Vine”) has announced its second transaction this month with the acquisition of Manchester Library Company LLC (“Manchester”). The deal gives Vine a diverse slate of 30 theatrically released films which generated approximately $1.5 billion in worldwide box office receipts and includes notable films such as Limitless, Immortals, The Fighter, Dear John and The Strangers. The acquisition complements Vine’s portfolio of library assets and follows its April 2017 acquisition of a controlling interest in Village Roadshow Entertainment Group (VREG).
Stated Jim Moore, CEO of Vine: “The Manchester transaction reinforces Vine’s strategy to leverage and parlay our expertise in managing and owning scalable entertainment assets. This library has the right blend of genres, rights opportunities and evergreen appeal that fits within our asset program.”

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD - BLACK AND CHROME: Watch The Promo For The One-Day U.K. Re-Release

Image
To date, George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road stands as one of the most continually stimulating films to date. Thus, its future franchise prospects notwithstanding, the film's critical and commercial success have since allowed for Miller and the studio to pitch a version of the film in Black And Chrome for an alternative delivery in coloring and display.
That version now has DVD and Blu-Ray availability in the U.S. while Warner Bros Pictures is gracing fans of the film in the U.K. with a one day Black And Chrome screening on Sunday, April 30. That leaves a few days for U.K. residents to check their local listings for locations and showtimes to watch as Tom Hardy's Max and Charlize one-armed Furiosa fight to defend a group of desperate slave wives from an army of occult soldiers and a dying Citadel led by tyrannical warlord Immortan Joe, played by none other than iconic Mad Max villain icon, actor Hugh Keays-Byrne.

Muay Thai Prison Thriller, A PRAYER BEFORE DAWN, Lands At Altitude For The U.K.

Image
Following its North American acquisition by A24 at EFM, pre-Cannes news is now stirring with word that Altitude has scooped up the U.K. rights for upcoming martial arts action drama, A Prayer Before Dawn. Jean-Stephane Sauvaire directed the film which is slated for the Midnight Screenings segment at Cannes next month.
In Klong Prem, there are 10 rules. If you break them, you will almost certainly die. If you don’t break them, you will definitely die. This is the true story of Billy Moore — jailed in one of the world’s toughest prisons, Klong Prem, the notorious “Bangkok Hilton.” Refusing to die there, Billy becomes a student of the lethal art of Muay Thai Boxing and in the process finds a brotherhood that will help guide him on an incredible journey to redemption. Filmed in a real Thai prison, Peaky Blinders and Green Room actor Joe Cole leads the Muay Thai boxing drama which takes its cues from author Billy Moore's own 2014 book of the same name. The film will mark Sauvaire's…

JOJO'S BIZZARE ADVENTURE: DIAMOND IS UNBREAKABLE: Things Get Even More Bizzare And Deadly In The Official Trailer!

Image
My own anime intake still has a lot to cover and especially with the world author Araki Hirohiko built within the chapters of the hit manga property, Jojo's Bizzare Adventure. The same could be said for director Miike Takashi who hasn't run short on manga adaptations this year, and especially with some of the content he's delved into for his Summer offering, Jojo's Bizzare Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable.
Thus, what we get in the brand new trailer now live as of Wednesday doesn't look like the film will cover much, although the arc itself, as explored in the subsequent anime, is surely an intense one; The film bookmarks just the latest chapter in the Jojo's Bizzare Adventure, immersing you in the quiet town of Morioh where we meet Higashikata Josuke, a gifted Stand user whose  abilities, embodied by Crazy Diamond, include repairing broken items and healing injuries other than his own.
As the story moves forward, Higashikata, in the course of his own self-discov…

Military Spy Action Drama, STRIKE BACK, Commences Principal Photography For Season Five Reboot

Image
After ending its four season run on Cinemax in the Summer of 2015, my guess was as good as anyone else's on what would become of the hit Cinemax/Sky series, Strike Back, if anything. Actors Sullivan Stapleton and Phillip Winchester led the show in its evolution as one of the most widely received military spy dramas to date and with uncertainty in the midst late last year, news broke last December of the show's reboot with a fresh new cast roster, character breakdowns and possible story details.
That reboot is officially taking shape as of the last several days and with Wednesday marking the first photo reveal of all four new Section 20 agents: Warren Brown ("Luther," "The Dark Knight Rises") as "Mac" McAllister, Daniel MacPherson ("Infini") as Samuel Wyatt, Roxanne McKee ("Game of Thrones," "Crossfire") as Natalie Reynolds and Alin Sumarwata ("Burning Man") as Gracie Novinas. Also joining the cast for produ…

Chris Morgan, Voltage To Produce Revenge Thriller Spec, THE PRODIGAL

Image
Writer Chris Morgan seems to be having a great run this season with the current billion dollar success of his latest script entry into Universal's Fast saga, The Fate Of The Furious. It certainly helped in nearly attaching him to the studio's current development of a spin-off with two of the franchise's co-stars and now we're learning that Morgan is part of another venture with Voltage Pictures.

The news at Deadline regards Luke Paradise's speculative script for The Prodigal, an action title now moving forward with a story centered as a modern revenge tale about a soldier's return home and his subsequent inquiry surrounding his brother's mysterious death. Morgan will produce with development head Ainsley Davies at Chris Morgan Productions, next to Voltage's Alissa Phillips and Nicolas Chartier producing and Jonathan Deckter executive producing.

Morgan, who has been with the Fast saga since The Fast And The Furious: Tokyo Drift, has several projects be…

ONCE UPON A TIME IN VENICE: Bruce Willis Leads The Chase In The Latest Trailer For The Action Comedy

Image
Seven years after the 2010 cop comedy, Cop Out, scribes Robb and Mark Cullen have reteamed with actor Bruce Willis for their latest debut helmer, Once Upon A Time In Venice. The film is poised for a June 16 release on VoD and with a trailer already circulating, it's a worthwhile glimpse into something that looks a lot more vibrant for a Willis headliner.
It probably has much ado with the presence of actor Jason Momoa (Justice League, Aquaman) on the official artwork, providing the big name status cast a film like this needed to move forward. Here he plays one of the major hurdles that await Willis, in the role of a Los Angeles P.I. on the eve of a comeback, now afoot with a smorgasbord of crooks and gangsters in his wake as he searches for his stolen dog.
The key cast also includes the venerable Famke Janssen and John Goodman along with Thomas Middleditch and Adam Goldberg. Catch the trailer now from Front Row Filmed Entertainment.

XYZ Films Picks Up Cambodian Martial Arts Comedy, JAILBREAK

Image
It was only a matter of time before we heard more from the happenings over at Kongchak Pictures who have been hitting the festival pavement this year for the new action comedy, Jailbreak. The film, directed by Jimmy Henderson and produced by Loy Te, made waves over at Hong Kong FilMart where it nabbed distribution in Korea following its local Cambodian release in January, and has since screened for attendees at the Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy in the past week.
The film stars martial arts exponents, actors Jean-Paul Ly, Dara Our and actress Tharothoum Sam, actor Savin Philip and debut feature film actress Céline Tran in the story of a tactical police escort unit who find themselves trapped inside a prison and forced to protect a notorious key witness from the deadly onslaught of inmates and the murderous Butterfly Gang who have descended from outside. Featuring action sequences choreographed by Ly with brilliant lensing by Godefroy Ryckewaert, the film has stood resonant am…

GEMINI MAN Courts Will Smith To Star

Image
Darren Lemke's pitch for assassin thriller, Gemini Man has been in a development slump for twenty years before news finally picked up last Friday. Thus, with the film ultimately landing at Skydance and acclaimed director Ang Lee possibly game to helm the pic, it looks like the film could have its star.

Leave that for actor Will Smith to decide per the latest report from THR as he's being courted to play an aging assassin forced back in the game when he's pitted against a version of himself 25 years younger and in his prime. The studio is much more keen on the film's possibility through the advancement of technology used to replicate actor's faces as seen in films like Captain America: Civil War and The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button.
Lee will be joined by Jerry Bruckheimer who will produce with Don Murphy executive producing. Smith, in the wake of his appearance in the hit DC adaptation of Suicide Squad, recently completed David Ayer's forthcoming Netflix exc…

Image
Following their announcement of Dante Lam's 2016 hit film, Operation Mekong, U.S. distributor Well Go USA is also announcing their presentation of Ringo Lam's latest, Sky On Fire. This one had its share of mixed reactions upon its release last November but still bodes as a fan favorite for those keen on actor Daniel Wu who leads the film on top of his current momentum on the small screen.
The official artwork can be seen below as well as the announcement. Watch this space for pre-order information.
Legendary filmmaker Ringo Lam (City on Fire, Full Alert) returns to his Hong Kong roots with SKY ON FIRE, the explosive crime drama packed with high-speed car chases, dramatic plot twists and fiery gunfights. Check Out Two Cannes Promos For Miike Takashi's BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL

Image
I suppose what bugs me most is that there's yet to be any decent poster art going online except for the same mobile viewing of the official home webpage for Miike Takashi's Blade Of The Immortal. The trailers and TV spots have all proven awesome though as the film looks amply solid as one might hope, and especially thanks in part to J-rocker MIYAVI's added touch.
As such, Cannes attendees can expect to catch the film next month for its forthcoming out-of-competition screening, as posed by Warner Bros. Japan with two short TV promos for the film which opens this Friday. The film is inspired by Samura Hiroaki's famed manga with Kimura Takuya and Sugisaki Hana leading the tale of a martial arts school heiress and her quest for vengeance with the help of an afflicted, immortal samurai with his own intentions.
CJ Entertainment, who was also reportedly involved in the film's early production stages, has also backed the film thus granting it releases in several territories…

The season two premiere of the hit AMC Network series, Into The Badlands, was a homerun hit becoming the #1 returning show thusfar with 4.5 million viewers back in March. Styled somewhat in the vein of La Femme Nikita, her newest starring venture, The Villainess, is well on the way toward a Midnight screening in May following its announcement earlier this month and with her own hapkido and taekwondo training in mind, a role well-suited in the hands of Confession Of Murder helmer, Seoul Action School's own Jung Byoung-Gil. KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE Ups The Ante In The First Official Teaser Trailer

Image
Following suit from its graphic novel roots in 2015, Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman: The Secret Service offered a feasible entrée of stimulating spy lore with actor Taron Egerton front and center. It piled on with all sorts of secret agent tropes and wit, intrigue, comedy and mystery, bookended by solid action and with one of the most memorable displays of violent cinematic action one could endulge.
We also got characters we could sympathize with, further drawing in the interest of where our story would go for those of us unengaged with the initial source material. Well, in the good standing of fans and with the intention to selling the hell out of tickets come this Fall, our select cast members have returned with a roster of new faces for Vaughn's latest sequel offering with Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and the first official teaser trailer is here as of late Monday. “Kingsman: The Secret Service" introduced the world to Kingsman - an independent, international intelligence age…

AJIN: DEMI-HUMAN: Satoh Takeru Awakens To Terror In The First Action-Packed Teaser For The Live-Action Adaptation

Image
Sakurai Gaimon's 2012 sci-fi action horror manga publication, Ajin: Demi Human, has a lot to its current story arsenal. How Bayside Shakedown film series and Shaolin Girl helmer Motohiro Katsuyuki is weaving it all together for its forthcoming feature film adaptation remains to be seen but right now, the teaser is something that needs to be seen to be believed, because it's looks too awesome.
For the unengaged, however, take into mind the presence of actor Satoh Takeru, known prolifically for helping bring to life Otomo Keishi's Rurouni Kenshin trilogy, now staking his claim as medical intern Nagai Kei, who is stricken by a car and presumably killed until he wakes up almost immediately and discovers himself to be one of many unknown hosts of an inexplicable translucent entity known as Ajin, mysterious creatures who have already made grim headlines around the world.
Imbued with untested, supernatural abilities - including possible immortality, it's a grim twist that ul…

OPERATION MEKONG Announces Its U.S. Summer Release!

Image
Acclaimed director Dante Lam's 2016 action thriller, Operation Mekong, was not without it's share of interesting dialogue regarding its subject matter. Its ripped-from-the-headlines narrative centered on the 2011 incident that occurred along the Mekong river involving a criminal drug ring in Myanmar, otherwose serving as the premise for another hopeful entertaining hit at the box office.
And so it was as it became one of the highest grossing films in China at the time, and with North America in its sites, the film has officially landed at its new home at Well Go USA. Release dates are announced for May 2 on Digital HD, and on Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack & DVD on June 6 with the artwork seen just below. Amazon.com already had pre-orders up and running so have at it!

Untitled Statham/Chasman Action Project Gets A Title

Image
It's been a year and a half since we last heard on action star Jason Statham's prior attachment to a Hong Kong action film project. Given whatever may likely have changed or still may, gladly it still appears to be active by way of Road Pictures's newly announced production slate which lists a variety of titles in different genres slated for televised and theatrical production and release according to Screendaily.

That report now includes Straw, the title of said thriller currently being scripted by Kurt Wimmer which last had Statham written to play an ex-pat in Hong Kong joined by a female high-level Chinese operative to solve a kidnapping case with global implications. Statham and Chasman are still reportedly producing through their SJ banner with Road also involved.
Production was set for last Fall but should likely advance with the title still in circulation in the news. At any rate, fans still have plenty to look forward to with a forthcoming Fast And Furious spin-of…

THE MAJOR SALUTES: Catching Up With Actor And Filmmaker Alexander Nevsky

Image
In case you're just tuning in, I've kind of been on a roll in the past week or more with interviews and largely due to the cast of the upcoming crime thriller, Black Rose. With the film less than a week away from its release, I've interviewed co-stars Matthias Hues and Kristanna Loken, and as of today, a new interview with its star and director, Alexander Nevsky in this following our interview last year in January.

He's got more films lined up and he discusses them accordingly as well in the text beneath, in addition to plans for a new book now well on the way to publication for health and fitness aficionados. Interestingly, he also hints at some possible prospects for the character he plays and that of others in the murder mystery millieu within Black Rose; you can read our latest review by clicking here while I humbly invite you to check out the previous interviews linked above with Hues, and especially Loken who delves considerably into her own involvement and inve…

GINTAMA Teases Origins, Heroes And Villains In A Brand New Live-Action Movie Teaser!

Image
Warner Bros. Japan has had quite the full plate on its hands with several adaptations this year, one such being the upcoming release of director Fukuda Yuichi's treatment of Sorachi Hideaki's popular manga property, Gintama. If you're not at all familiar with the Shonen Jump publication, it does comes highly recommended by fans and especially those keen on the current-running anime who are now waiting the upcoming final season.
With that in mind, we now have our aforementioned Hentai Kamen 1 and 2 helmer's take om the property which has actor Oguri Shun spearheading our wacky sci-fi period action comedy set in an alternate Edo period in Japan where aliens have colonized, the samurai are obsolete, and extremist forces await their chance to seize control. For this, the latest short teaser has arrived with ample new footage following the first in December, further iterating the events from the top of the story right through to the Benizakura Arc with Oguri facing off with…

...If you're thinking Universal Soldier: Regeneration, I like how your mind works.
